The Friends of the Shelter depends on donations to provide basic veterinary care to the shelter animals. Every dog & cat leaves the shelter spayed-neutered, heartworm tested, vaccinated, de-wormed, microchipped and started on monthly Heartworm & Flea prevention. If an animal comes in with a treatable skin allergy, injury, an infection or is heartworm positive, we are committed to treating that animal if it is medically & financially feasible. This is only possible with donations to our medical fund in the form of sponsorships & donations. The $95 adoption fee is their basic vetting costs. Anything in excess of that amount is paid from our Medical Fund. Without ongoing sponsorships and general donations, we would not be able to provide this medical care to the animals in our care.
- $50 sponsors any shelter animal. This sponsorship lowers the adoption fee by paying for a portion of their basic veterinary care. With this sponsorship, the adoption fee is lowered to $50.
- An additional $50 sponsorship of a shelter dog pays for 3 months of Heartworm & Flea prevention for them. Every dog is heartworm tested after the 5 day stray hold & is started on monthly Heartworm-Flea prevention. With adoptions taking place at a slower pace, it is not uncommon for the dogs to be at the shelter for 2, 3, 4 or even 5 months. Without an additional sponsorship and general donations to the Medical Fund, we cannot afford to provide this very needed preventative to our shelter dogs. By keeping the dogs on Heartworm prevention, they are adopted heartworm negative with continuous HW prevention while in our care.
- General Donations to our Medical Fund are needed on an ongoing basis. It is from this fund that we are able to pay for extra medical care, as needed, above and beyond the basic vetting that each dog & cat receives. For example: Heartworm treatment. If we are able to treat heartworm positive dogs, we are better able to get them into adoptive homes or secure Rescue commitment because the cost of their treatment has been paid.
